Searching for the blue of the Apulian sky

«On my interesting yet desperate search for particular shades of blue it became clear to me that there are certain shades that simply cannot be achieved by blending colours. I discovered pigments that have become absolutely essential to my work, one after the other: so many colours that can’t be obtained from other colours. Did they not tell us at college that every hue could be blended…»

In Otranto I painted two series of pictures:

«Come è profondo il mare – Wie tief das Meer ist»
«Come è rosso il papavero – Wie rot der Mohn ist»

These works were an important stage in my development from representational painting to monochrome, non-representational painting.
